NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SUSTAINABILITY: FOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT BY UUM SCHOOL OF LAW WAS A SUCCESS

SOL ONLINE: On 5 March 2022, the School of Law (SOL) of Universiti Utara Malaysia organized the National Symposium Sustainability: Food Waste Management. The event was attended by more than 60 postgraduate students and staffs of UUM. Three invited panels shared their thoughts on the domain on food waste management in Malaysia and beyond, focusing on sustainability, legal framework of food waste management in Malaysia as well as its operations and challenges from the view of Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp).

In officiating the Symposium, the Dean of SOL Associate Professor Dr. Yusramizza Md. Isa @ Yusuff mentioned that: “Food waste is one of the growing concerns, not only in Malaysia but in many major cities in the world. Managing it does not rest solely on the shoulders of the government or the NGOs, but also the general public, as what we are seeking is world sustainability. This can only be achieved by the concerted efforts by all parties, so that we can leave this world in a better shape for the future generation”. Dr. Yusramizza further added, “SOL is committed to lend its hand to work together with any relevant parties from the government or non-government to improve the waste management initiatives.”

Three panels shared their thoughts on the issue of food waste management in Malaysia, Associate Professor Dr. Haslinda Mohd Anuar and Associate Professor Dr. Ani Munirah Mohamad from SOL, and Ms. Lee Yiew Chen, an Environmental Health Officer from SWCorp Malaysia.

The Symposium achieved its objectives, particularly to serve as a platform for sharing of experiences and ideas on food waste management in Malaysia. Hopefully the Symposium benefitted all participants.
